TIPS FOR TOTAL HEALTH: GET AWAY FROM IT ALL
Our workaday, dog-eat-dog world primes us for stress aplenty. And when the job's done, there are always domestic chores, be they bills, home maintenance or family politics.
No one's suggesting you should shirk your manly duties, but you ought to get a breather from them now and again. That means more than an annual vacation (though you should take one of those, too). Rather, take time out of every day to remove yourself from your hectic life.
"A man needs his own territory where he has time to go and be by himself," says John Dintenfass, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. According to Dr. Dintenfass, that private time gives men a chance to reflect on the day's events and recharge their mental batteries. "That time is essential for your own identity-otherwise you lose your sense of self," he says.
If you don't have a den or shop to retreat to, make some other private space for yourself. This could be as elaborate as designating a certain room in the house at a certain time of day as your "quiet room" or as simple as walking around the block by yourself before you walk through the door. "It requires discipline," says Dr. Dintenfass. "But if you don't do it, life and work will control you, instead of you controlling them." Some men realize years too late that they have no sense of identity and wonder who they are, he adds.
